Is a treatment center for me?  Can I stop drinking just going to alcoholic anonymous meetings?  In the old days, there weren't very many alcoholic treatment centers. You had to do it the hard way; that was the way I came up. I didn't know what a treatment center was.  In my day they would send me to a mental hospital like it or not. I didn't think I was nuts, I just drank to much. So I stuck with alcoholic anonymous and they got me through it all. But that was 90 meetings in 90 days. Most treatment centers are only 28 days.

You do the math. In the old days you would be sleeping in someones extra bedroom and sweat the alcohol out. Now there is detox centers everywhere. They are a lot safer. I lived though (LOL)  Detox is boring. You think it is a waste of time.  But what you are not thinking about is the longer you are in detox the longer you are dry and safe from the dt's (it you have drank to that point).

At some point and tine you will have to make up your mind to just go to an alcoholic treatment center, or detox and tough it out by making that call to alcoholic anonymous and going to meetings. And keep going! You may have reached a point in life were the law will not let you drive or you don't have a car. A treatment center may be the way to go. I have seen treatment centers do a lot of good work. A lot of alcoholics came out growing faster then I did. I didn't like the fact that I had to work so hard and do it the hard way, but I was a little sicker then most.

If you have made up your mind to go to a treatment center, then get your phone book and find one you like. Go to detox if they think you need to and they will get you in to the treatment center as soon as they can.  If they cant get you in right then, that does not mean you should keep drinking. Go to an alcoholic anonymous meeting near you. Talk to other people, ask for their advice.

The day comes and you are to go into the treatment center. You have all your affairs in order and ready to embark on the recovery you have wanted. Open your mind and leave the rest of the world out side the doors. This is the selfish part of the program. you need to work on you. I can not say that enough..... you are there to work on you.

Most alcoholic treatment centers are based on the 12 steps. That is a well proven way to recover. I wish you luck. Here are some facts about treatment centers.

FACTS ABOUT ALCOHOLIC TREATMENT CENTERS

The facts about alcoholic treatment centers speak for themselves.  There are thousands of people who have put their trust in those who know and won the fight over alcohol.  Of course, whatever you put into it is what you get in return.  So set your mind on doing whatever it takes to be free of alcohol.  Give it your all.

Facts about alcoholic treatment centers conclude there are many factors why a person starts drinking and becomes an alcoholic.  Some of these are : peer pressure, where and how they live, what is going on in their life, and people with low self esteem probably top the list.  It can also do with family, friends, workplace and the people they work with which could mean extreme stress or those who like to have a few drinks every day after work.

No matter what addiction people have, others wonder why they don’t just stop. It’s not just willpower that is needed. Most need help from an outside source.  Although some people can quit on their own, most need treatment and support.

The uncontrollable need or craving overrides everything in their life.  Nothing means more to them including eating, relationships, jobs, etc.  It even overrides all the guilt they feel.  They just cave in.  Even if they try over and over again, they find they can’t do it alone.  It’s so hard for them to ask for help that they try everything but asking anyone for help.  Society is harsh on people who don’t conform to the norm, so it’s not uncommon for an alcoholic to feel shame.  They feel they will be considered weak if they ask for help.

The facts about alcoholic treatment centers prove alcohol, as well as drugs, is a way of escaping emotional pain. To get to the bottom of the problem may mean psychological, social, and medical help.  Many alcoholics are also facing legal problems including divorce and loss of custody of their children.

Treatment can mean going to Alcoholics Anonymous.  It can also mean seeing a psychiatrist at the same time.  Family members can go to Al-Anon and Al-Ateen for help for themselves.  Everyone needs better coping skills.  Family counseling and marital counseling can also help.  This is definitely a family problem.  Everyone has been affected by the alcoholics behavior.

There are medications that can help the alcoholic detox.  Detoxing effects the entire body and the body has been abused for a very long time.  It takes time to detox and become healthier again.  Antabuse and ReVia help prevent a return to drinking.

Detoxing can have many side effects such as:

  • Vomiting

  • Headaches

  • Jitters; nervousness

  • Chest pain

  • Stomach pain

  • Delirium

  • Depression

  • Thoughts of suicide

  • Anger

  • DT's

  • Heart and blood pressure problems

  • Kidney problems

Quitting is a shock to the system and better done in a treatment center where they know what to watch for and how to help.
